Three candidates, each of a different political persuasion, have qualified for a Special Election to represent House District 118 covering a narrow, unincorporated strip of southwestern Miami-Dade.
They include:
• No-party construction executive Frank De La Paz, who ran unsuccessfully for a Miami-Dade Community Council seat in 2016.
• Democratic electrician and former Community Council member Johnny Farias, who ran for HD 118 last year.
• Republican lawyer Mike Redondo, who enjoys financial backing from his party’s state leadership.
Gov. Ron DeSantis called the Special Election after appointing former HD 118 Rep. Juan Fernandez-Barquin to serve as Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts and Comptroller.
