A bill inspired by turmoil in the Miami River and a surge in boating accidents across Florida in recent years is headed to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ desk after sailing past its final stop in the Legislature.
The measure (SB 606) by Republican Miami Sen. Ileana Garcia, dubbed the “Boating Safety Act of 2022,” would update safety and regulatory strictures for boat rentals and the use of maritime vessels.
It would also require boat-renting businesses to collect and maintain more documentation, including information on customers and their guests. Those documents would be subject to law enforcement examination for at least one year.
