Dogs will no longer face restrictions based on their breed – only behavior according to legislation Gov. Ron DeSantis signed that goes into effect Oct. 1.

The measure (SB 942) overturns any remaining municipal and public housing restrictions against dog breeds, which have mostly targeted pit bulls.

Miami still has an ordinance prohibiting pit bulls. Sunrise’s law, passed in 1989, requires “pit bull dogs” to be locked in a pen or muzzled.

Miami area Republican lawmakers Sen. Alexis Calatayud and Rep. Demi Busatta Cabrera brought the bill forward, pointing out the arbitrary application of the “pit bull” label that could tear apart families.
