Fabled WWII training ground dynamite for many activities

Fort Pierce Inlet State Park was once known as Dynamite Point, the training ground for U.S. Navy Frogmen, the World War II forerunners of today’s Navy Seals.

But now the point’s name could be used to describe the kind of birdwatching, surfing and exploring offered here on a half-mile of beach and acres of coastal hammock.

It lies along North Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County, part of the Indian River Lagoon’s estuary that attracts some 300 species of birds, from plovers to bald eagles.

And then there’s the inlet in the park’s name that generates currents worth catching.
