Legislation to criminalize firing a bullet onto someone’s property without consent narrowly avoided getting shot down at its first Senate stop.
The measure (SB 270), which advanced 5-3 on a bipartisan vote, classifies unauthorized shootings across private land as trespassing, punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment.
Democratic Boynton Beach Sen. Lori Berman, the sponsor, said Floridians can fire guns at home, but “people who are on their property should have the right to be safe.”
The bill is inspired by Lake Worth Beach resident Nicole Adams, who survived a stray bullet fired from a nearby home firing range on Sept. 10.
