Parents of man killed in Metrobus crash to receive remainder of $1.25M settlement

Years after Jason Sanchez was fatally injured in a collision with a Miami-Dade bus, his parents will receive the balance of a $1.25 million county settlement.

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a claims bill clearing $950,000 to Jacqueline Abreu and Manuel Sanchez, who sued Miami-Dade after a Metrobus struck and killed their son, who rode a motorcycle, in May 2019.

The parties reached an agreement last April, but a law shielding governments from costly lawsuits only permitted the county to pay $300,000 without further legislative action.

That came through a measure (SB 6) by Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and Rep. Juan Carlos Porras.
