Miami Seaquarium star orca Lolita dies before her promised release

The world over is mourning the death of Lolita, Miami Seaquariam’s killer whale believed to be the oldest orca in captivity.

Plans were in motion to free 8,000-pound Lolita, also known as Tokitae, who had never lived with other orcas since her capture at 4 years old. Lolita, believed to be 57 years old, appeared to be suffering from a renal condition, NPR reported.

Lolita performed at the park twice a day for five decades until her retirement last year. Calls for her release had grown louder over the years and her mother reportedly still lives in Pacific Northwest waters.
