Floridians who keep guns in cars would have to store their weapons securely and out of sight under a proposal by three South Florida lawmakers.
Sen. Lori Berman and Reps. Joe Casello and Dan Daley filed bills to require that guns left in unoccupied cars are kept “from ordinary observation” and in a locked trunk, glove box or other “securely affixed” container.
Violators would face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
FBI data shows guns are stolen from vehicles every 15 minutes.
“Ensuring that firearms are securely stored,” Casello said, balances “personal rights with community safety.”
