Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Trooper Joe Sanchez just made the race to become Miami-Dade’s first Sheriff in decades a 15-person contest.
The U.S. Army Reserve veteran and former Miami Commissioner filed paperwork Monday, National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Sanchez, a Republican, said he is taking a leave of absence while on the campaign trail. He called on other candidates working as cops to do the same.
“I believe in transparency, and it is not appropriate for law enforcement officers to be campaigning while on the taxpayers’ dime,” he said. “Follow my lead and take a leave of absence immediately.”
