Winner: Miami-Dade Republicans

A recent analysis by the Miami Herald shows Republicans have cut Democrats’ voter registration in Miami-Dade County nearly in half. Democrats had a 15-point edge in 2019. That’s down to eight points as of July 2023, giving Republicans momentum in a historically pivotal county for Democrats.

Loser: Sophia Lacayo

After raising tons of cash for a 2022 Miami-Dade County Commission bid – a race which she lost – Lacayo is now facing criminal charges relating to campaign finance violations. Prosecutors are saying Lacayo shifted as much as $450,000 through multiple bank accounts to skirt campaign finance laws on donation limits.
