Miami-Dade Sheriff candidate distances himself from brother’s DUI controversy

Mario Knapp says his campaign for Miami-Dade Sheriff shouldn’t suffer from allegations his cop brother eluded a DUI due to in-department favors.

“This has nothing to do with me,” said Knapp, a retired Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Major. “My brother is his own person.”

NBC 6 reported that his brother, Willy Knapp, rear-ended a vehicle while driving home from a bar in October 2022. A responding officer’s body camera recorded the vehicle’s driver asserting that Willy Knapp was “obviously” intoxicated.

There was no DUI investigation. MDPD says an internal probe is ongoing.

Mario Knapp retired over a year before the crash.
