FIU relocates ‘Cuban Privilege’ author talk after backlash, surge in interest

by carlislewillard

Florida International University is moving a Friday book talk and adding another speaker after Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera complained the material is “hate-filled.”

The book, “Cuban Privilege” explores America’s immigration policy, which for decades disproportionately favored Cuban immigrants.

Author Susan Eckstein said it documents Cubans’ “unique entitlements” but argued the U.S. “should give more equity” to other immigrants, not detract from Cubans.

Cabrera slammed FIU, complaining the book stirs “anti-Cuban” rhetoric. FIU responded by relocating the event from Coral Gables to a more capacious space at its main campus and inviting pro-Cuban democracy speaker Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat to participate.
