A state law that would fine city officials for passing local gun control laws will be allowed to stand as the state Supreme Court ruled against a suit seeking to have the law declared unconstitutional.
The suit against the preemption law was inspired by the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as communities, most of them in South Florida, sought a way to control guns beyond the state’s regulations.
Weston spearheaded the suit against the 2011 statutes that calls for a $5,000 fine for any city official who passes a local ordinance stricter than state gun regulations.
