Judge orders Gov. DeSantis to show why School Board election winner shouldn’t be seated

Circuit Court Judge John Cooper says Broward School Board election winner Rod Velez should be allowed to take his seat, despite Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order that kept him from the dais.

Cooper said the DeSantis administration has 40 days to argue otherwise.

Velez won election in 2022, but a 1995 felony conviction clouded his win since he hadn’t formally had his right to run for office restored.

The Broward State Attorney declined to prosecute him. But on the same day Velez was to be sworn in, DeSantis blocked him and appointed Republican Dan Foganholi in his stead.

Velez sued.
