Coconut Creek high school math teacher Poland-bound to teach war refugees

Monarch High School math teacher Jim Gard is spending three weeks in west-central Poland teaching English to 90 children, including some refugees from Ukraine.

The 40-year veteran teacher is going with his son, a junior at the school where he teaches, and 40 pounds worth of gifts to give those students from the war-torn area.

He said the phenomenal experience he had doing it last year – and the gratitude and friendship he encountered – convinced him to make the trip again. Some of the relationships he forged prompted him to conduct a Zoom SAT math prep course over the school year.
