Miami-Dade leads all American counties in estimated Alzheimer’s cases, according to a new study that found 16.6% of residents 65 or older – roughly 77,000 people – have the disease.
That’s a rate markedly higher than the 12.5% of seniors statewide and 10.7% nationally with the disease, Rush University Medical Center researchers found.
Because it is Florida’s most populous county and a popular destination for retirees, it makes sense Miami-Dade ranks high in Alzheimer’s prevalence.
A 2022 University of Miami study found Blacks and Hispanics are at greater risk of developing the disease due to higher poverty rates compared to non-Hispanic Whites.
