Surfside election brings sea change to town government

by The 100 Companies

Surfside voters overhauled their government leadership in the town’s General Election, bringing back former Mayor Charles Burkett while keeping one incumbent member of the five-seat Town Commission.

Burkett won a head-to-head contest with Shlomo Danzinger, the man who supplanted him two years ago in the aftermath of the town’s deadly Champlain Towers South condo collapse.

Since then, Danzinger made headlines for being disrespectful and confrontational during city meetings, particularly with Commissioner Nelly Velasquez, whom voters re-elected.

They also elected Tina Paul and Ruben Coto, who previously served on the Commission, and law professor Gerardo Vildostegui, an outspoken critic of Danzinger.
