Preservationists hoping for stronger Everglades protections against encroaching construction in Miami-Dade will have to wait until next year.
Senate lawmakers approved a bill (SB 1364) by Miami Republican Sen. Alexis Calatayud that would establish a protective, two-mile buffer zone around the wetlands.
Construction could still occur within it, but developers would have to eliminate all project aspects that could hurt Everglades restoration.
The Senate unanimously approved the bill this month. But its House companion by Coral Gables Republican Rep. Demi Busatta Cabrera didn’t budge after clearing the first of its three committee stops in January.
That effectively killed it this year.
