An American Dream come true: Herald hires its first immigrant executive editor

by The 100 Companies

For the first time in its history, the Miami Herald has hired its first immigrant executive editor.

Alex Mena, who started at the paper as a clerk, will be the executive editor for the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald and the Florida regional editor for McClatchy, which also includes the Bradenton Herald.

“Today is the day when somebody’s immigrant American Dream comes true,” Mena posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Mena was born in Nicaragua and arrived in the U.S. on his father’s back as they crossed the Rio Grande, according to the Miami Herald.
