Healthcare Heroes: A Political Force

As Martha Baker, president of SEIU 1991 and registered nurse at Jackson Hospital, saw COVID-19 cases rise — members exhausted and dying — she was astounded by a lack of leadership from local and state leaders. So, she set out to change it.
Launching the “Healthcare Heroes” campaign, Baker drew attention to the sacrifices of frontline workers. The campaign propelled candidates — champions of healthcare heroes — to major wins. The union was an early supporter of Daniella Levine Cava and SEIU 1991-backed candidates not only won, but won by big margins.
SEIU 1991 is now a political force no one should reckon with.
